There are three primary sects or schools of thought within Buddhism: Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana. Our beliefs encompass all three.
The Hinayana does not acknowledge the Mahayana or Vajrayana teachings as coming from Shakyamuni Buddha. The Mahayana acknowledges the Hinayana teachings as the fundamental theoretical foundations, but also includes teachings that are not held by the Hinayana. Vajrayana includes the teachings of both of the other two and adds a tantric esoteric layer designed to facilitate quicker development along the path to enlightenment.
